General Information

The UCSB Contracts & Property Office has the primary responsibility for negotiating and developing financial and business terms for all rental and lease agreements relating to real property. A real property agreement or lease is where a relationship between landlord and tenant
is created. This type of agreement grants the tenant the use and possession of property for a specified period of time with specific terms & conditions.

Each proposed lease agreement must be considered in light of the applicability of the University of California's Standing Orders and Bylaws, including the UC Seismic Safety Policy, UC procedures for implementation of the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970 (CEQA) and the California Coastal Zone Conservation Act.

In addition, some rental/lease documents must be reviewed by UCOP General Counsel, approved by the UC Vice President, and in some cases, approved by the Regents. Departments considering the lease or purchase of off-campus space should contact the Contracts Analyst, at 893-5836.

Please allow sufficient time for property to be found and terms to be negotiated. This process frequently requires months of work.

Off-Campus Storage Units

There is one storage company whose rental agreement language has been pre-approved by the University. Please deal directly with the storage company management to reserve a space. Send the lease with the department's signature to the Contracts and Property office for final approval. You may NOT move in until the lease has been signed by the Contracts Office.

A-American Self Storage

Departments can consider other self-storage units, but these contract documents must first be reviewed by the Contracts Office. Negotiating terms with these companies can often be time consuming and difficult.
